I think there a lot of different ways that we could do it.

At the moment, we are doing all the cheap travelling (going on road trips within one day’s travel) so that we don’t have to spend on accommodation, plus we can bring our own food for the trip. With the savings we will invest it, compound it, then in many years we will have more to spend on more expensive holidays overseas.

I suppose for me I question the conventional and if anyone is keen to do something then ask why not and then work backwards on the how.. It’s definitely not that easy however as you mention you can have anything although not everything..

Great post Mike, everyone loves travel right ;)? ha

I don’t have a travel credit card yet – but I have used all of your over tips. I recently used my Amex points to pay for my flight to DR.

The biggest tip I have for domestic travelers is the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass. Google it and you’re on the way to having a great year with your significant other!

We went to Mexico (I’m from the UK) for our honeymoon and at the hotel they were asking ‘why on earth have you come now?!’ – it rained 2 days and the remaining 8 days were scorching hot sunshine. The hottest place I’ve ever been! If I was ever lucky enough to go again, I would go the same time of year. x

Until then I will continue to find deals or use Priceline’s name your own price tool. I’ve saved a lot of money on flights and hotels by doing this over the years.

It’s a challenge in and of itself to travel with 3 young children, but we use points on virtually every trip to mitigate the cost significantly. That being said, travel is highly important to us so we allocate for that in our budget without sacrificing any of our other goals.
