What I can tell from my humble experience, is that I myself and a living proof for side-hustle capacity issues. I do have a 9 ti 5 job, but still, whenever I got the strength, I add 3-4 hours of extra work, but sadly, I can do this for no more than a handful of days in a row. At a certain point, you’re simply out of capacity and “you need to rest”… “Think twice” is what I would say, because doing extra work outside of my 9 to 5 job is extremely, extremely tiring, not to mention I barely have any free time to read, or simply leave the TV on, and let my brain to rest for a bit… Side-hustling is definitely not a thing everyone can handle!

Dmitri

I like your pre-hustle checklist, that’s definitely something everyone should think about beforehand.

Apart from my 9-5, I have about 4-5 side hustles at all times. It’s funny, because in Korea, if you have side hustles, generally, people assume that you’re not making enough in your main job. I’ve had friends ask me if I was making peanuts at my desk job for me to be sacrificing so much of my free time for extra work. That’s not the case at all! I have zero debt and I make a comfortable salary — I just enjoy saving aggressively. Not to mention, I love my side hustles.

I definitely think it’s worth considering factors in your life before diving in, but I’m also a firm believer in trying and failing rather than wondering what if later down the line. If someone has an idea and enthusiasm, usually they’ll find the time to make it work. That said, a timeline is a good idea to measure success and be practical about your side income idea.

I thought I would have a bunch of time to dedicate to a couple side hustles; however, I got a promotion at work. Although I was excited, at first I was working 50+ hours per week.

It is definetly a great idea that you mention reviewing your spending habits. Just by reviewing my budget I was able to save 300-400 per month.

You make some great points about why some people may not need to do it. Motivation is key. There are tons of folks who just don’t want it enough.
