She had surgery to remove tumors right before coming home to us, plus a bunch of teeth extracted. Luckily, her tumors were benign (!) and I’m not facing any extra medical expenses for the foreseeable future. But this likely means I can’t get inexpensive pet insurance due to a preexisting condition. I’ve also read that many insurance policies don’t cover medical issues common to your dog’s specific breed, which seems like the opposite of what it should be! So, I’m steadily building up an emergency fund for her—this is the best/only option in our case. Wouldn’t trade her for the world :)

I always assumed pet health insurance wasn’t worth it even though I experienced a near tragedy two years ago when my cat swallowed a needle. The bill was insane. Still, I never looked into it. I would have loved to be in Rachael’s position instead of paying out of pocket.

Like with a human, there are so many unexpected expenses that could come up.

And most insurance requires you to pay upfront, then seek reimbursement.

So we have the Banfield protection plan for our cat. Free visits, free vaccines, a free yearly cleaning and a number of free tests. Plus a discount on further services. It works for us right now. But since we’re getting a puppy soon, I may have to suck it up and look for “real” insurance.

Our dogs were pretty well behaved so we didn’t have to take them to the pet very often. I remember there was this one episode of a nasty flesh wound caused by some sort of bacteria or worms or flies (I was pretty young so don’t remember the details) but that was fixed with OTC medicines. So yeah, the idea of having an emergency pet fund account seems pretty foreign to me, but I do know avid cat lovers who regularly spend a lot of money to take care of them, and this idea would be pretty suitable for them

I’ve had small vet bills for her but am not sure what I would do if I had an exorbitant bill. This is a good reminder that I should start an emergency fund for my cat. I personally don’t think pet insurance is worth it as there are often a lot of terms and conditions that are not covered. For me, I think emergency a pet emergency fund would be best.

Our dogs are both getting older and we plan on beefing up our emergency fund for them. We also plan on looking for pet insurance that may cover them a little bit too.
