Good to hear about continuing your education! That’s so great. I nearly started my MBA before I went the book-writing route and added a couple other projects to my plate. I may still go back some day but it’s all about weighing the pros and cons.

Good point about comfort. It’s so easy to get comfortable! I think there are a lot of people who are simply scared of change. Unfortunately, change is inevitable. Senior management or the manager you report to can change immediately and unexpectedly. It’s important to always be aware of those possibilities and get ahead of things as much as possible.

That’s so great, John! I told another member of my team recently how valuable it can be to browse the job listings. I think there is so much value there that people are missing out on.

I used to be absolutely obsessed with job boards when I was in college because I guess I didn’t have one but now that I’m working, I have never even opened up a job board website. That will be changing soon. I’m looking at side income opportunities but haven’t found a good one yet. Going to look more into freelance writing because I love to write!

I think talking to a recruiter is a great idea even if you aren’t looking. I like to attend networking events. You know know who you may meet that could help you with your main gig or even expand your side gig.

A few years ago, I was at a happy hour and we all wore name tags with our occupation. I decided to write “blogger” even though that wasn’t my full time occupation. I ended up meeting an editor of a local newspaper that gave me the chance to write in the paper a few times.

It’s definitely something I’m going to start doing now that you mentioned it. It will come in very handy when those annual reviews and one on one meetings come around and my manager asks me what my goals are;)
