Something that I am working on now is to become better at networking. I have found a mentor who is great at networking and he has given me tips as well as allowed me to practice with him.

Sometimes you just have to put yourself in the situation and start talking. Once you get over the initial nerves, the conversation will be fine.

I think bringing a wingman is very helpful. Especially if it’s someone who is good at keeping the conversation going but isn’t someone who will try to dominate it. Most people that don’t enjoy networking dislike it because they fear approaching people and then keeping the conversation going after they do. Having someone else at your side can be a big benefit. Thanks for sharing!

My brain goes dead for whatever reason. Maybe it’s because I’m an introvert and can’t wait to get out of the situation. But I know that networking is so incredibly valuable. Thanks for the awesome tips and I will definitely be working on them.

I can relate, Josh. The word “networking” has somewhat of a negative, slimy stigma to it, but I’m hoping some people can redefine the meaning by actually being interested in making genuine connections with people. That’s one of the things I love about the personal finance community. Many of my friends have advanced their careers, but are willing to help others get the connections they worked for because they know how hard it was.

Thanks Amanda! I think that’s the key – being genuinely interested. Networking events can provide all sorts of opportunity, not just related to your career, and the best way to take advantage of that is by listening and asking questions.

I’m totally with you! I’m not that great at going up to random people, either, but it gives me comfort when I realize that I’m probably not alone in that.
